Last month, we said goodbye to an American icon. Dr. Maya Angelou – author, poet, performer, Civil Rights activist, humanitarian – left us with a treasure of words, wisdom and inspiration. My favorite Maya Angelou quote has always been:

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

I use this quote often to guide my personal and professional life. After all, that is what service is all about. It’s about how you make colleagues, clients and customers. Did you inspire them? Did you make them feel valued? Did you leave a lasting positive impression?

Dr. Angelou certainly did all of these things and will be always be remembered not only for her authentic voice, but how she made Americans from all walks of life feel empowered.
