“Échale Ganas”: Carrying Family Traditions Forward

Armando Garcia Guzman | Director of Dining Services | Morrison Living
“One memory that has always stayed with me is celebrating Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on November 1 and 2 with my family in Mexico. Growing up, it was a special tradition where we came together to remember and honor loved ones who had passed away.
When I moved to the United States, I was surprised to see how well known Día de los Muertos is here. Even though it is celebrated differently, it helped me feel connected to my childhood and my roots. My family and I still create an “ofrenda,” or altar, at home every year to honor our loved ones and keep the tradition alive.
Being part of the Hispanic community means carrying forward values like family, hard work, and resilience. A phrase my mom has always repeated to me is “échale ganas,” which means “give it your all” or “don’t give up.”
Those words have stayed with me throughout my life and career and continue to remind me to work hard and keep moving forward. I am proud of my heritage and grateful for the lessons my family has taught me.”
