Compass Group USA at Climate Week NYC: Leading the Charge on Sustainability

October 02, 2024

The Nest Climate Campus 2024, set against the backdrop of Climate Week NYC, promised to be a hub for climate action, innovation, and collaboration – and Compass Group USA was there for it all.

The Javits Center was packed with 9,400 sustainability and environmental leaders, innovators, and change-makers when Ann Sheridan, Compass Group USA’s VP of Corporate Communications, sat down with four of Compass’ sustainability experts for a conversation about how we empower our clients and guests to turn intention into action.

Meet our experts:

  • Suzanne Landry, Vice President of Wellness & Sustainability
    Eurest USA
Suzanne shared how Eurest chefs use simple, delicious ingredients to empower America’s workforce and reduce carbon emissions. By using simple and delicious ingredients and leveraging menu engineering and design, her team can drive behavior change and make sustainability a priority for their customers.
  • Monalisa Prasad, Vice President of Sustainability
    Chartwells Higher Ed
Monalisa outlined the innovative ways Chartwells Higher Ed is empowering students to live their climate beliefs while dining on campus. She emphasized how important it is to meet students where they are and make it easy to adopt sustainable practices.
  • Mary McCarthy, Vice President of Sustainability
    Levy Restaurants
Mary told us how Levy is enhancing the guest experience at games, concerts, and events while doing good for people and the planet. She also highlighted the significance of starting small and scaling up. By making sustainable practices easy and engaging for guests, they’re finding it easier to overcome challenges and get buy-in from their clients and guests.
  • Lisa Roberson, National Director of Population Health & Sustainability Strategy
    Morrison Healthcare
Lisa emphasized the importance of making sustainability fun and accessible. By introducing plant-forward campaigns in healthcare settings and involving chefs in promoting sustainability, the team is creating positive momentum and seeing that sustainable choices are popular among guests.

At Compass Group, we serve more than 13 million meals a day in hospitals and senior living communities, schools and universities, America’s workplaces, and sports and entertainment venues– and as our expert panelists described, sustainability success looks different in every single one of them. But there are a few universal takeaways:

1. Start Small and Scale Up: You don’t have to conquer the world on day one. By taking small steps, we can build momentum and drive significant progress toward our sustainability goals.

2. Make Sustainability Fun and Accessible: Whether it’s through engaging campaigns or user-friendly solutions, making sustainability fun encourages widespread participation and long-term commitment. Not to mention, it becomes part of the culture.

3. Leverage Education and Partnerships: When we work together and share knowledge, we can amplify our impact. Educating clients and guests about the benefits of sustainable practices and forming smart partnerships is key.

We’re proud to have shared the main stage at this year’s The Nest Climate Campus with a diverse group of thought leaders and innovators at the forefront of climate action.
