Honoring National Hispanic Heritage Month: Joel Ramirez
As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the stories and contributions of associates like Joel Ramirez, who has woven the rich tapestry of his cultural heritage into his culinary journey. Joel began his career with Wolfgang Puck Catering in 2012 and has since risen to the role of Executive Sous Chef, a testament to his dedication and passion for the craft.
Born in Mexico and raised in Los Angeles, Joel grew up in a close-knit family of five, where the importance of cultural traditions and family unity was instilled in him from an early age. “My parents never failed to remind me of my roots and culture,” Joel recalls. This strong connection to his heritage is where his love for the kitchen was born. Growing up, he loved watching his mother cook. The familiar aromas of Mexican spices, the smell of freshly baked bread, and the sounds of toasting seeds and chilis over an open fire are all memories that have profoundly influenced his approach to cooking. Through his dishes, Joel tells the story of who he is, connecting the past with the present.
For Joel, one of the most cherished aspects of his heritage is the sense of togetherness that comes with family gatherings, particularly during the holidays. Surrounded by uncles, cousins, and family friends, these moments of shared stories, games, and food highlighted the importance of family unity, a value that continues to inspire him today.
One tradition passed down from his parents that Joel continues to celebrate is the making of “Three Kings Bread,” or La Rosca de Los Reyes, a Catholic tradition observed on January 6th. Each year, he bakes this special bread, a symbol of his pride in his Mexican heritage. “I am proud to be part of the Mexican community,” Joel said. “It is a beautiful culture with a diverse cuisine, many traditions, and strong family values.”
This month we celebrate not only the vibrant traditions and stories of the Hispanic community but also our associates like Joel Ramirez, who keep these traditions alive through their culinary passion and creativity.
