Commemorating Black History: Dr. Derren A. Thompson on Opening Doors for Others

2026 Black History Month

Black History Month invites reflection on both history and the people carrying its lessons forward. As part of Compass Group’s celebration of “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” we are highlighting associates whose work helps shape inclusive cultures and meaningful opportunity. One such leader is Dr. Derren A. Thompson, Sr., whose career is grounded in empathy, mentorship, and impact.

Derren is the Senior Director of Culture, Opportunity & Inclusion for Eurest National Accounts and has been with Compass Group for three years. He grew up in Baltimore City, the middle son of three boys, and today is both a husband and a father.

Early experiences of family, community, and responsibility continue to inform how he shows up as a leader. “I was led to my current career path by a deep passion for people — helping them see their full potential, overcome challenges, and ultimately thrive,” he notes.

In his role at Compass, Derren values the opportunity to partner closely with frontline teams, cultivate meaningful relationships, and work toward outcomes that elevate both people and culture. For him, progress is built through trust, connection, and shared purpose.

Derren began as an hourly employee and benefited from leaders who took the time to mentor him — helping him retool his steps and grow into the professional he is today. “Those experiences instilled in me a commitment to lead with empathy, elevate others, and create pathways of opportunity for the people and communities I serve,” he adds.

Reflecting on his journey, Derren is mindful of the legacy that made his path possible: “My impact is rooted in the shoulders I stand on — people who paved the way, believed in me, and modeled resilience and excellence.” For him, Black History Month is both a moment of gratitude and a call to action: to use his voice, his work, and his influence to open doors for others and continue the progress for generations to come.
