Commemorating Black History: Sohn Stancell on Mentorship and Leadership

As part of Compass Group’s Black History Month celebration, we are spotlighting associates whose journeys reflect leadership, growth, and lasting impact — stories like that of Sohn Stancell, whose 30-year career exemplifies dedication and mentorship.

Sohn is the Unit Director for SSC Services for Education and has been with Compass Group for three decades. He grew up between El Paso, Texas, and Jonesboro, Georgia, graduating high school in Jonesboro before earning a full football scholarship to Western Kentucky University. After four formative years there, Sohn returned to El Paso, and began working for SSC. Soon after, he relocated to his first account in Salt Lake City, Utah, launching what would become a long and fulfilling career.
“When I was hired by SSC, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Sohn shares. “After my first year, I knew this would be a company I would retire from.” What kept him motivated were the opportunities for growth, the strong sense of community, and the family-like culture. Today, he finds fulfillment in sharing that experience with others through his leadership.
Sohn often jokes that SSC stands for ‘Sohn Stancell Corporation,’ reflecting the pride and ownership he brings to his work. That mindset has shaped his commitment to developing others. As new managers join the sector, Sohn frequently serves as their training manager during their first two weeks, helping them build a foundation for success. Mentoring future leaders has become one of the most meaningful aspects of his role.
Reflecting on Black History Month and his own journey, Sohn sees his career as part of a larger legacy of progress and opportunity. Being trusted, supported, and recognized for his work, he says, has made all the difference. For more than 30 years, he has influenced people at every level — from frontline employees to CEOs — and continues to shape the next generation through mentorship and example.
Sohn’s story is a reminder that commemoration is not only about honoring the past, but about recognizing those who each day are helping to build the future.
