Honoring Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Christopher Paglinawan
Christopher Paglinawan, sous chef at Morrison Living, was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii. His culinary journey began at 15, cooking alongside his father. As a third-generation Hawaiian-Filipino, his heritage shapes both his life and work.
Every August 14th, his family gathers for the pangagi prayer, honoring the souls of the departed – a tradition deeply rooted in respect and remembrance. Cooking for four or five hundred people at no cost is second nature to him. “It’s a time to honor our ancestors and show respect for those who came before us,” he says. “Cooking has always been central to our traditions, and I’ve learned many Filipino and Hawaiian dishes from my parents. Now, I pass those recipes down as part of our family gatherings.”
Another tradition he upholds is the art of knife skills. “It’s more than just a practical skill – it’s a way of honoring the ingredients and ensuring food is prepared with the same care and attention as the recipes passed down through generations,” he explains. “It’s not just about the food; it’s about keeping our culture, stories, and values strong.”
As a proud member of the Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, he celebrates its rich blend of cultures, resilience, and deep connection to family and the land. He believes in the Hawaiian concept of malama – caring for and respecting people, the earth, and future generations. Likewise, the Filipino value of bayanihan, the spirit of communal unity and selflessness, resonates with him. “It’s a message everyone could carry with them in their own lives,” he adds.
Christopher has been with Compass for three years, starting with Eurest before moving to Morrison Living. As a sous chef, he finds great fulfillment in leading, mentoring, and collaborating with his team. “What I love most about my role is the opportunity to lead and mentor,” he shares. “It lets me combine my passion for cooking with my dedication to exceptional service. Being part of such a dynamic environment is incredibly rewarding.”
His cultural background shapes both his personal and professional life, emphasizing community, respect, and generosity. “Whether at home or work, my heritage guides me to nurture relationships and share my culture through cooking,” he says.
For Christopher, food is more than nourishment – it’s a bridge to tradition and connection. “Cooking isn’t just about food for me,” he reflects. “It’s about sharing my story, honoring my roots, and bringing people together.” Looking ahead, he hopes to continue growing, learning, and sharing his love for cooking with everyone he meets.
